ZIP Codes are actually just collections of addresses that the US Postal Service has assigned to the same 5-digit code. It obviously helps them plan their delivery, but most post offices don’t actually generate maps.
 The key to good zipcode map data is to start with an excellent street and address network. Then databases from the USPS can be linked to create street segments that each belong to the same ZIP Code. Then those segments are combined to form ZIP Codes that can be put on a map as an area.
